From May 22–24, the NWTRA welcomed approximately 40 Activate NT participants, mentors, and chaperones to Sǫ̀mba K’è / Yellowknife for a three-day leadership and project planning workshop. Participants travelled from communities across the territory, including Tthebacha / Fort Smith, Denı́nu Kų́ę́ / Fort Resolution, Xátł'odehchee / Hay River, Whatì, Tłegǫ́hłı̨ / Norman Wells, Paulatuuq / Paulatuk, and many others, to begin preparing their community recreation projects.
The workshop combined leadership development, recreation training, and hands-on project planning. Participants explored topics such as leadership and communication skills, project planning, budgeting and financial management, reporting, and risk management while working through the early stages of their own Activate NT projects. Participants also had opportunities to connect with one another, share ideas, and learn from the diverse experiences represented around the room.
An evening Dene Games workshop provided participants with an opportunity to learn, play, and experience traditional northern games while building relationships with fellow participants from across the Northwest Territories.
The workshop marks the beginning of the next phase of Activate NT, as participants return home to continue planning and delivering recreation projects designed to benefit their communities. Over the coming months, these youth leaders will create new recreation opportunities for children, youth, adults, and Elders across the territory.
The NWTRPA would like to thank all participants, mentors, chaperones, facilitators, and partners who helped make the workshop a success. We look forward to seeing these projects come to life in communities throughout the Northwest Territories.
