Community Cleaner, Cooler Air Spaces for your community
Wildfire season is here, and communities can take steps now to create safer indoor spaces during periods of poor air quality. Through the Community Cool and Clean Air Spaces initiative, NWT community governments can access equipment to help establish cool and clean air spaces for residents during wildfire smoke events.
Air quality affects all communities of the Northwest Territories. Whether it is dust and heat or wildfire smoke, people’s health and well-being is at risk when they are breathing poor quality air. The NWT Recreation and Parks Association has teamed up with the office of the chief public health officer of the Northwest territories to provide cool and clean air equipment to communities.
Equipment provided is plug-and-play. Air purifiers and cooling equipment can be provided to treat air spaces up to 50,000 ft.³. This is a program for community spaces that are free and available to the public when cool or clean air spaces are needed for community members who may not have access to them in their own homes. Requirements for the space are that they have public access, Internet to allow air monitoring that can be accessed by the community through a web portal, and that can be closed off from adjoining spaces if it makes the space too large. Rooms like community halls, recreation centres, and youth centres are generally excellent spaces. Larger gymnasiums and arenas are too large for the equipment we have available.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide air purifiers or air conditioners to private residences or non-community owned buildings or facilities. Tax-based NWT communities are in eligible for this program.
