Participants recently had the opportunity to learn and practice kayaking skills during a session delivered by the Northwest Territories Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) at the new Yellowknife Aquatic Centre. The session focused on introducing fundamental kayaking techniques in a welcoming and supportive environment for participants of all experience levels.

During the session, participants practiced core paddling strokes used to move, steer, and control their kayaks. They also learned how to safely exit a capsized kayak, helping build confidence and safety awareness while on the water. The session included a few fun games that allowed participants to practice their skills while enjoying time on the water together.

This session was organized in partnership with the NWT Literacy Council and was tailored for newcomers to Canada. It provided a welcoming opportunity to try a new recreational activity, connect with others, and build confidence in a skill that is widely enjoyed across the Northwest Territories.
If you or your organization are interested in hosting a similar kayaking session in your community, please reach out to dbrinston@nwtrpa.org for more information.
