Łútsël K’é's Community Cooler, Cleaner Air Space Project
The Northwest Territories Recreation and Parks Association was in Łútsël K’é, NT in September to set up and help open its community cleaner, cooler air space at the wellness centre. We were there with members of the office of the chief public health officer of the NWT. Łútsël K’é Councillor Berna Catholique officially opened the Community cleaner, cooler, air space in a ribbon cutting ceremony. Despite other community activities taking place, the event was well attended! Thanks to all who came out.
When wildfire smoke or other poor quality air events take place in the community, residents now have access to the wellness center as a respite space for cleaner and cooler air. A powerful air conditioner and evaporative cooler were left at the wellness centre for the community’s benefit. In addition, 2 medical grade air purifiers were installed at the wellness centre. An IQ air quality monitor monitors both the indoor and outdoor air quality at the wellness centre in Łútsël K’é and can be accessed on the internet for real-time air quality monitoring both indoors at the wellness centre and outdoors at Łútsël K’é.
The NWTRPA’s Community Cooler, Cleaner Air Space project has helped create community spaces in 23 communities, with seven more communities expected to receive their equipment before March 31, 2027.
