The Northwest Territories Recreation and Parks Association hosted its 2025 Annual Conference and AGM in Inuuvik / Inuvik from October 7–9 under the theme Building Leadership for Sustainable Recreation. About 20 participants, including some from outside of the Beaufort Delta, gathered for three days of discussion, learning, and connection.
The conference opened with a keynote session, Recreation and Wildfire Smoke: Sustaining Programs Through Poor Air Quality, which explored the growing need to adapt recreation delivery in the face of environmental change. Participants joined breakouts on related topics such as facility readiness, health considerations, and adaptable programming.

One of the most engaging sessions was the Elders in Motion Active Living Exercise Program (ALEP) workshop, which introduced practical tools and resources that help older adults stay active and connected in their communities. Participants had the opportunity to experience parts of the program and reflected on how similar initiatives could support aging well and inclusive recreation across the North.

Other sessions included a hands-on curling workshop, a water safety discussion, and a session on using AI tools in recreation program planning. The Bright Spots session and evening Movie Night provided additional opportunities for participants to gather informally, share ideas, and unwind after full days of learning.

While attendance was lower than originally hoped, it was in line with expectations leading up to the event, and the program ran smoothly overall. The smaller scale allowed for relaxed conversations and meaningful exchanges.

The NWTRPA thanks all presenters, volunteers, sponsors, and local partners in Inuuvik / Inuvik for helping make the conference possible. Planning is already underway for next year’s event, continuing to focus on leadership, sustainability, and community recreation across the NWT.
