(Yellowknife – January 16, 2018) Today the NWTRPA announced that Walk to Tuk will be helping an unprecedented number of NWT residents get active this winter. When registration closed yesterday, over 4300 people on 324 teams from 30 communities had registered for the popular physical activity challenge. That number represents ten per cent of the total population of the NWT, and about a 19% increase from last year.

“Walk to Tuk was created to help motivate people to stay active during the winter when it is dark and cold outside.” Said Geoff Ray, NWTRPA Executive Director.  “We are very excited that so many people are taking part in this year’s Walk to Tuk challenge and committing to staying active this winter. We can’t wait to see how many teams make it to Tuk and beyond!”

Walk to Tuk is the largest and longest physical activity event in the NWT. Over 17,400 participants have taken part in Walk to Tuk since the Challenge was started in 2010. For the past four years, during the challenge participants have, on average, exceeded the amount exercise recommended by the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines.

For Walk to Tuk, community members, schools, and workplaces are encouraged to form teams and conceptually walk the distance of the Big River from Fort Providence to Tuktoyaktuk. Each team will do their best to walk a total of 1658 km between January 2 and February 28, 2018. Along the way, teams can win prizes, see their team progress along the river, plan team walks, take photos and have fun enjoying the crisp cold air.
