What is Walk to Tuk?

Walk to Tuk is an annual community walking challenge where NWT community members, schools, and workplaces are encouraged to form teams and conceptually walk the distance of the Big River from Zhatıé Kų́ę́ (Fort Providence) to Tuktuuyaqtuuq (Tuktoyaktuk). Participants have from January 2 to February 29, 2020, to collectively walk 1,658km and get their team to Tuktoyaktuk.

When is Walk to Tuk?

January 2 – February 29, 2020.

Who can participate in Walk to Tuk?

Anyone! All NWT residents are encouraged to take part in Walk to Tuk, and we’d love to see a team from each community for Walk to Tuk 2020.

If you don’t live in the NWT, don’t worry. Teams can be formed anywhere in the world, but only NWT residents are eligible for prizes.

How do I participate?

  • Each time that you head out for a winter stroll, track the time or distance you spend walking and add it to your team’s total. If walking isn’t your thing, check out the list of other accepted activities for Walk to Tuk here. You can walk, skip, run, or snowshoe, amongst many other activities!
  • Be as active as you can during January and February to get yourself and your teammates to Tuktoyaktuk, a total distance of 1,658km. As your total adds up, you can follow your team’s progress along the river on our website with our handy Walk to Tuk map
  • If your team walks enough between January 2 and February 29, 2020, then you’ve made it to Tuk and get your hands on the coveted “I Walked to Tuk” t-shirt!
