Denise McDonald – Team Captain Profile
Denise MacDonald has been participating in the annual Walk to Tuk program since it began 9 years ago and walking around her community (and beyond) even longer. We thought we’d share a little more about Denise in this Team Captain Profile!
Team: Super Troopers
- She is 61 years old;
- Walk to Tuk has kept her active in the winter months (she use to not be as active before W2T);
- She has a facebook group for the team and they share healthy tips and motivate each other;
- Denise thinks Walk to Tuk should be a national event!
Why is Denise such a big fan of the Walk to Tuk program? Well, there are several reasons.
First, it inspires her to get out during the coldest months of the year and meet up with other people. Not only does this make her existing friendships stronger, but it makes way for new friendships too! Although her team mates consist mainly of people in Inuvik, there are others with strong connections to the arctic town as well. Just the other day, Denise walked around Yellowknife with a member of the Super Troopers team who lives there.
Secondly, Denise enjoys the fact that Walk to Tuk encourages her to remain active, despite the dark days and plunging temperatures. During the time of year when many people want to hibernate, she finds that regular walks help to manage stress and wind down. An outdoor enthusiast, Denise appreciates the natural beauty that surrounds her and notes that “we have a beautiful land to explore.”
We are so glad to have Denise return as a captain this year! She motivates and makes meaningful connections with people on her team. She would also like to remind us that the Walk to Tuk program is for everyone; it doesn’t require any special equipment. When she’s on the road and a lap around Boot Lake trail isn’t possible, Denise adapts. Sometimes a good mall walk when she’s out of town gets her heart rate pumping!
