World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day! Organizations from around the world, including governments, community agencies, educational institutions and professionals in the field of aging hold events to raise awareness of elder abuse.
The United Nations state that Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older people around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community. Let’s give it attention here in the NWT.
An NWT organization with resources and information related to Elder abuse awareness is the NWT Network to Prevent Abuse of Older Adults (NWTNPAOA). This group is comprised of NWT residents who advocate for older adult abuse awareness and prevention. Here is the link to their website: http://www.nwtnetwork.com/. A 24 hour support line is also available in the NWT 1-866-223-7775.
Not only is June Recreation and Parks Month but it is also Senior Citizens’ Month. Several communities including Fort Good Hope, Fort Simpson, Tulita, Fort Providence and Yellowknife are organizing events in celebration of Elders. We encourage you to spend time with an Elder in your community this month and celebrate the impact they have on the quality of life in the NWT.
