Awards Nominator's Guide

Please target your nomination and letters of support toward the specific criteria outlined below for each award. The information included in your nomination can be in any form, as long as it contains the basic criteria for the award as outlined for each award. This includes resumes, lists, written paragraphs, letters, photographs and statements.

Please be as specific as possible when outlining activities and projects the nominee has been involved in, and include details that may be of interest.

Honourary Life Membership Award

Honours a member who has made an outstanding contribution to the recreation and parks field and who has served the NWT Recreation and Parks Association for a minimum of 10 years. This award may recognize individuals or organizations.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the individual's volunteer achievement with the NWTRPA
  • Outstanding achievements in the field of recreation and parks
  • Number of years of service
  • Description of contributions to the leisure services field at a municipal/regional/territorial/national level
  • 3-5 letters of support

Award of Merit

Honours an individual who has significantly contributed to recreation and/or parks development in the NWT. The Award of Merit recognizes achievement at the community, regional, territorial, and/or national level.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the individual's involvement with the NWTRPA
  • Number of years of service
  • Outstanding achievements
  • Impact on the leisure services field at a municipal/regional/territorial level
  • 3-5 letters of support

Facility Maintainers Award

Recognizes an individual who has demonstrated excellence in the maintenance and operations of a NWT recreation facility, and/or has initiated programs and services that have made a significant contribution to recreation facility development and operations.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Outstanding background in facility maintenance
  • The facilities they are responsible for
  • Special accomplishments
  • Community impact
  • Teamwork and innovation
  • 3-5 letters of support

Active Living Award

Recognizes a community, organization, or individual in the NWT that has demonstrated a commitment to active living or health promotion in their community. Award recipients will be committed to supporting active lifestyles that contribute to healthy, vibrant communities.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Special achievements
  • Community involvement
  • Participation and impact on community
  • Include information that details a cooperative community effort in improving the quality of life for its citizens
  • 2-5 letters of support

Student Leadership Award

Recognizes an NWT student graduating from any post secondary institution in the field of recreation, parks, or physical education, and who has made a significant contribution to recreation and parks services through their volunteer activities, work experience and studies.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the nominee's special accomplishments, leadership positions
  • Volunteerism
  • Academic excellence
  • Extra curricular and community involvement
  • Information on the nominee's interest in the leisure services field
  • 2-5 letters of support

Recreation Leader Award

Recognizes a community recreation leader who has consistently demonstrated the professionalism, skill and qualities outlined in the NWT Recreation Code of Ethics.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the special achievements
  • Innovation in programming
  • Community involvement
  • Volunteerism, leadership
  • Impact on the community
  • 3-5 letters of support

Parks and Environmental Leadership Award

Recognizes a community, organization, or individual in the NWT who has demonstrated positive leadership through the development or promotion of trails, parks or green-spaces. This award also recognizes leadership in the areas of outdoor or environmental education, research or advocacy.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the achievements and innovation in the areas of parks, trails or greenspace development
  • Evidence of long term commitment to the environment by their contribution in the area of environmenal advocacy/research
  • Exampleas of innovation and dedication
  • Outdoor recreation promotion/participation/programming
  • Community impact
  • 2-5 letters of support

Scott McAdam Youth Leadership Award

Recognizes a youth between the age of 15 and 24 for outstanding effort and contribution towards improving the quality of life of residents in their community through volunteerism, work experience and studies.

The nominator(s) should include:

  • Detailed information on the special achievements in the area of volunteerism, leadership, academic achievement and school/community involvement
  • 2-5 letters of support
