Aquatics
Water is an important part of the culture, economy and health of the NWT, as the NWT has thousands of lakes, rivers and coastal areas.
Unfortunately, there is a shortage of well-trained and experienced aquatics leaders in the NWT. This coupled with a lack of coordination in aquatic programming at the territorial level over the years following 1999 caused the NWTRPA to examine the issue in February of 2004.
Since then, the NWTRPA has formed a territorial aquatic committee and developed a strategic workplan in order to improve community aquatic programs.
We work to improve Aquatics in the NWT through the following programs:
- NWTRPA Recruitment Drive - To assist comunities with finding aquatic supervisors.
- Summer Regional Aquatic Workshops - The NWTRPA delivers 2 workshops each summer to Aquatic supervisors, staff and interested recreation staff on the procedures for running an aquatic facility in the NWT.
- Resource Manuals for Supervisors - The NWTRPA has developed a pool and a waterfront resource manual in order to assist supervisors with running their community facilities.
- Resource manuals for Recreation Coordinators - The NWTRPA has developed manuals to assist Recreation Coordinators with understanding the procedures in running an aquatic facility.
- Shallow Water Pool Certification - The NWTRPA is working to develop a Shallow Water Pool Certification with the Lifesaving Society to assist communtiies with Class 'A' pools with training local residents to supervise their pool.
- Communication - The NWTRPA communicates year round with aquatic supervisors across the NWT and offers assistance when needed.
- Advocacy - The NWTRPA works with National partners in the Aquatics area to advocate for safe and enjoyable aquatics programs with the communtiies in the NWT and other regional and territorial organizations.
