In 2014, the NWTRPA and Arctic Response supported the development and delivery of a winter camp for girls from Lutsel K’e. Under the watchful eye of local elders, the girls built a quinzhee, practiced ice rescues and hypothermia wraps, learned GPS skills and firearms safety, made bannock, and listened to stories.
In 2013, the NWTRPA supported teachers and staff at École J.H. Sissons School in Yellowknife as they prepared for and went on a three-day canoe trip to Prelude Lake with grade five students. In addition to honing their canoeing and camping skills, participants learned more about the natural history of the area, food preparation, and GPS navigation.
The Mackenzie River Youth Trip was an award winning program that was started by the NWTRPA in 2007. Since 2011, the trip has been delivered by the Deh Gah School in Fort Providence. Participants in the trip completed photovoice projects as part of their program debriefing.
