Over 100 Recreation Leaders Will Gather in Hay River
The NWT Recreation and Parks Association’s Annual Conference, Awards Banquet, and AGM begin in a few days!
From October 8-10, the 2019 NWTRPA Conference will bring recreation professionals, youth centre workers, health care workers, educators, Elders, and volunteers to Hay River from across the territory. This year will feature keynote speakers Scott McQueen and Jordee Reid, who will recall the history of sled dogs in Canada’s North, as well as Ashley Carvill and Susannah Beckett who will present “Our Families, Our Way: The Peacemaking Circle”, a Carcross/ Tagish First Nation project that has revitalized the practice of peacemaking circles. Other highlights of the event include Speed Dating and
Bright Spots sessions, as well as a few opportunities to get to know Kyle Aviak, a former member of the Kugluktuk Grizzlies, both on and off the field!
Conference attendees will have an opportunity to join NWTRA Board Members and staff at the AGM to learn more about what the organization achieved over the last year. The AGM is an opportunity for NWTRPA members to get involved in shaping recreation in the territory by electing new board members and voting on association business.
The NWTRPA Conference is also host to the NWTRPA Awards Banquet, an opportunity to acknowledge dedicated recreation professionals and volunteers in northern communities for their continuing efforts and achievements in promoting recreation and active living for all northerners. The NWTRPA Awards Program has a long history of celebrating excellence in Northern recreation and this year we are excited to recognize six individuals from across the NWT— but you’ll have to wait until October 9th to find out who!
