The NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) has begun the work of building a network of on the land leaders in response to calls for increased communication and collaboration between people working in land-based programming.

The move comes in the wake of a gathering of on the land leaders hosted by the organization in February at the Yellowknife Ski Club. Twenty-six people representing each of the regions in the NWT came together to discuss the rewards and challenges of facilitating on the land activities and to identify concrete actions that will increase the capacity of leaders and organizations to deliver culturally relevant, safe, and meaningful on the land programs.

“The round table was an important opportunity for on the land leaders to connect, share, and identify priorities for future work,” said NWTRPA Executive Director Geoff Ray. “On the land program leaders empower people to connect with their land, their history, and their language. Support for on the land programs is very important and I am excited that the NWTRPA can help support this work.”

A detailed account of the meeting can be found in the On the Land Round Table Report, released today by the NWTRPA.

While a number of actions were identified as priorities for the group, the call heard most consistently from participants was for a network of on the land leaders. Not only will a network create a space for sharing resources and best practices, but it can also serve as the foundation for other priorities identified during the meeting, including training, advocacy, research, and resource development.

Monthly newsletters and bi-weekly tea and talks are just two ways that the organization is working to connect and support on the land leaders. The NWTRPA is also collaborating with the recently formed NWT On the Land Collaborative Fund to develop a website that will serve the needs of projects funded by the Collaborative, as well as on the land leaders in the NWT. A second meeting of on the land leaders is being organized in conjunction with the NWTRPA annual conference which will take place in Yellowknife, September 27-29, 2016.

Established in 1989, the NWTRPA is a non-profit organization that works with communities across the NWT to promote healthy living through active recreation. The mission of the NWTRPA is to promote the inclusion of recreation and parks as key to our way of life. We do this by supporting leaders, communities, and partners through training, advocacy, and networking.
