(Yellowknife, NT – January 31, 2017) – Today, the NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) applauded the federal government and community governments for providing funding for 6 recreation-related infrastructure projects throughout the NWT. The money will go towards recreation centre upgrades in Fort Simpson and Fort Smith; arena upgrades in Lutsel’ke, Fort Good Hope and Fort McPherson; and the construction of a baseball field in Tulita. In total, the federal government will be committing $7, 681, 000 to these projects while the community governments will contribute $4,280,334.

“Infrastructure projects such as these are vital to ensuring that recreation areas remain accessible to those who need them most.” Said Geoff Ray, NWTRPA Executive Director. “We are glad that government is demonstrating that they share our understanding of the importance of these areas.”

As per A Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015: Pathways to Wellbeing, “Strengthening the infrastructure for recreation, sport and physical activity is critical to strengthening the health, vitality and economies of local communities.”
