Looking Back on 30 Years of the NWTRPA

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the NWT Recreation and Parks Association. In honour of this milestone, we’re looking back at the people, events, programs, and projects that have made the NWTRPA what it is today!

What better place to start than with a program that recognized the connection between healthy people and a healthy environment: Go for Green! The Active Living Environment Program (ALEP). In the mid-1990s, ALEP supported community-designed and -led initiatives that promoted active living and environmental citizenship. ALEP prioritized projects that demonstrated partnership, centred experience and education, were safe and accessible, and promoted active transportation, all of which are continued priorities of the NWTRPA today!

Funded through Health Canada’s Action Plan on Health and the Environment under Canada’s Greenplan, the program was administered in the NWT by the NWTRPA. Grant recipients included Gametı̀ Youth and Elders Paddling Together, Liza McLeod Memorial Park Beautification Project (Fort Liard), Let’s Make a Difference Youth Summer Camp (Enterprise), and the Yellowknife Garden Collective.

Did you receive funding through ALEP? We’d love to hear about your project (jdunkin@nwtrpa.org).
