Community Leaders Retreat
Every two years, we offer a Community Leaders Retreat. This retreat takes community leaders to Blachford Lake Lodge for 2 nights to learn and grow from one another and facilitators. Being out at Blachford Lake Lodge not only gives leaders time with each other, but also time to enjoy the outdoors with some snowshoeing, ice fishing, skiing, and much more.
The retreat is geared towards staff and volunteers, with or without a formal title, who want to play a stronger role as a community leader. There are a wide variety of sectors that leaders come to the retreat from, including health, social services, recreation, economic development, arts, environment, and more.
This year we are excited to announce that we will be partnering with Dechinta with the focus of the retreat being on decolonization. Dechinta has three incredible facilitators that will take 16 participants through the 2.5 day retreat. Dr. Glen Coulthard is Yellowknives Dene and an associate professor in the First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program and the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia. He is also an author and co-founder of Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. Dr. Leanne Betasmosake Simpson is a renowned Michi Saagigg Nishnaabeg scholar, writer, and artist who has been widely recognized as one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation. She is also a writer and faculty of the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. Closer to the retreat we will announce the Elder that will be joining this team to bring leaders a wealth of knowledge.
Registration is now open, but limited to 16 leaders. To be considered registered, leaders must have their payment submitted. The retreat will take place from February 27 – March 1, 2019. Included in the $750 + GST (for NWTRPA members) is the return flight to Blachford Lake Lodge from Somba K’e (Yellowknife). Non-NWTRPA members are welcome to register at a rate of $775 + GST.
